Chungju Lake's Crocodile Island has a unique charm that simply cannot be expressed with just the word 'beautiful.' Here are a few points about the special qualities of Crocodile Island that I personally saw and felt. Shall we take a look together?
- Unique Natural Landscape: The peaks rising along the waterways of Chungju Lake look like a group of crocodiles. Especially on misty mornings or at sunset, they create an even more mysterious atmosphere. This kind of terrain is a very special landscape not easily found anywhere else in Korea.
- Photographer's Sanctuary: Thanks to its beautiful natural scenery, many photographers visit this place. The ever-changing appearance of Crocodile Island, from season to season and hour to hour, truly has a thousand faces. It's a great place to capture that 'life shot'!

| Where's the Best Viewpoint for Crocodile Island? |
To best appreciate and photograph Crocodile Island, the viewpoint is definitely important, right? Here are two of the best viewpoints to truly enjoy Crocodile Island. The path there might be a bit challenging, but it will be well worth it!
1. Simhangsan Observatory (A.K.A. 'Crocodile Island Observatory') ๐️
This is the most representative spot to view Crocodile Island. You can search for 'Simhangsan Observatory' on your navigation system, but you'll need to walk up a steep path for about 15-20 minutes after parking. Sneakers are a must! Once you arrive at the observatory, the magnificent view of Crocodile Island unfolding before your eyes will make you exclaim 'Wow~'. If you go early in the morning, you can see Crocodile Island enveloped in mist, and that sight is truly spectacular.
- Pros: The optimal viewpoint to capture the entire Crocodile Island at a glance.
- Cons: Requires walking after parking, and the path can be steep. (Caution advised for the elderly or children)
- Tip: If you go at sunrise, you can capture Crocodile Island with the sunrise and mist in the background. It's tough climbing up in the pre-dawn air, but it's incredibly rewarding!
2. Near Oksunbong Suspension Bridge (Crocodile Island Point) ๐
There's also a spot near the Oksunbong Suspension Bridge where you can see a part of Crocodile Island. While it's not as grand a panorama as the Simhangsan Observatory, it has the advantage of being much more accessible and convenient to visit along with nearby tourist attractions like the Oksunbong Suspension Bridge and Gudambong Peak.
- Pros: Easy access after parking, can be combined with a visit to Oksunbong Suspension Bridge.
- Cons: Difficult to get a full view of Crocodile Island.
- Tip: Cross the Oksunbong Suspension Bridge and enjoy the scenery of Chungju Lake and the area around Crocodile Island from a different perspective. The suspension bridge itself is quite impressive!
Crocodile Island is located on private land, so direct entry to the island is not possible. Most visitors enjoy Crocodile Island by viewing it from a distance at the Simhangsan Observatory or near Oksunbong. Drone photography may be restricted, so it's a good idea to check in advance!

Crocodile Island changes its attire with each season and time of day. Let me tell you the optimal times to visit!
| Season | Features | Pro Tip! |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (April~May) | You can see a fresh, green Crocodile Island with new foliage. There are many clear days with less fine dust, so visibility is good. | Great for a picnic under the warm sunlight. Even better if you visit nearby cherry blossom spots! |
| Summer (June~August) | The greenery is densest, and the waters of Chungju Lake shine particularly blue. Sometimes, sudden showers can create a mist. | It can be quite hot in the mid-summer afternoon, so early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended. Bring a cool drink! |
| Autumn (September~October) | The sight of Crocodile Island adorned with autumn leaves is breathtaking. Red and yellow leaves harmonize with the blue waters of Chungju Lake, creating a picturesque scene. | This is the time to see Crocodile Island's peak beauty! Weekends can be crowded, so consider a weekday visit. |
| Winter (November~February) | Snow-covered Crocodile Island offers a different charm. You can enjoy the snowy landscape in a calm and quiet atmosphere. | If there's heavy snow, access might be difficult, so be sure to check the weather forecast before visiting. Dressing warmly is essential! |
